Ang Huling Pork ‘N Beans ni Aling Mildred’ Serves this question on the Table: How can power be so freely given yet remain so impossible to earn?
There should be a rerun! Definitely there should be for this amazing and eye-opening play which focuses on things that we don't want to discuss in a way that is funny, and we can laugh to it but still they are realities that we should resolve one way or another.
PUP THEATER, MANILA – PUP Sining-Lahi Polyrepertory proudly presents the culminating production of its 43rd Theater Season Apprentices, “ANG HULING PORK ‘N BEANS NI ALING MILDRED”, written by Alyssa Denise Insigne and Maven Brences and directed by Maven Brences. The show will be staged on July 10 and 11, 2025, at Tanghalang PUP, College of Communication Building, PUP Sta. Mesa.
Bringing together the visions of SLP Batch 2023–2024 apprentices, this theatricomic play explores how ordinary lives are a battle to normal people and how a simple can of pork and beans transforms into a symbol of power, control, and who gets to eat last. Using the fast-paced rhythm and punchlines from classic sitcoms, the play delivers heavy truths under the guise of laughter.
The story follows Aling Mildred and her kapitbahays in Kupang Kupang, a small neighborhood; where everyone knows each other, so gossip is a gospel and survival is an art. Through biting humor and sharp satire, the play examines the intersections of labor, gender, and governance seen through the lens of a single can. At its core is a question: How can power be so freely given, yet remain so hard to earn?
“This isn’t just satire,” says the show’s director. “It’s a warning. Pork and beans, in our story, is a comfort food and a metaphor for power that weaponizes. Who holds it? Who eats it? Who is deprived of it? And who’s left with the can?”
Educators, students, and workers are invited to reflect on how our play can serve as a catalyst for conversation and realization.
