Tilapia Scandal - Eating tilapia is not healthy anymore


Most of us are used to eating Tilapia.  It is one of the most affordable kind of fish in the market plus it is usually included  whenever there is a party or celebration.  Eating tilapia is not healthy anymore according to a website which was also shared on Facebook.  Let us see why this famous fish is now the subject of controversy.


Tilapia and Omega 6 Fatty Acids


According to the article, Tilapia contains Omega 6 which they said is a fat worst than bacon.

This is a bold claim for a fish in which many people are eating and in fact became a staple food as well.  What is Omega 6 Fatty Acids?


Almost all nutritionists call omega-6 fatty acids as "essential" fats for good reason same with omega-3.  They said that our body need these acids for many functions, from building healthy cells to maintaining brains and nerve functions.  Since our body cannot produce them the only source is food.

Fact check:  Omega-6 is not harmful

Tilapia is worst than bacon


This is also a very bold claim.  Bacon is pork which in itself contains various amounts of fat.  Bacon which is pork and comes from pigs does not produce omega-6 fatty acids since one of the sources only come from "poultry."

Besides not having an essential fat, bacon contains a large amount of sodium which in large consumption puts you at risk of heart diseases and high blood pressure.  Moreover, proccessed meat contains preservatives which when absorbed by your body becomes nitrosamine, a chemical compound that could cause cancer.

Fact check:  Bacon is a million times harmful than Tilapis


Eating tilapia can still be a health concern




Yes it definitely can and this depends on whether it is from the fresh or cultured.  Cultured tilapia may bring harm once the way it is cultured is contaminated.  Since these species of fish used to eat a lot they will easily be susceptible to any chemical or pesticide added on the water.

So be careful still but nonetheless we can say that they are healthy.

What makes tilapia healthy?

  • They contain both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
  • It promotes muscle growth (if you are a bodybuilder this helps).  It contains protein with 23 grams in a 3.9oz serving, to be exact. The good thing is that with that serving it only contains between 110-180 calories and zero carbs.
  • It's good for your kids since fish contains much of their needed nutrients plus the tastiness of tilapia will make your kids eat more healthy food.
  • Tilapia contains Vitamin B12 which is important for cognitive functioning and helps proper forming of red blood cells.
  • Tilapia is also good for your bones because it contains both calcium and phosphorous.


Why are there articles online saying Tilapia is bad for your health?


Well, these are called fake news.  Some people would write them because since tilapia is one of the most popular fish in the planet writing about them will surely make the article popular.  Thus, these writers can cash on the ads when you click them.

Another reason for this is because competitors of Tilapia would be sending you a negative message so that alternative food and fish can come in.

It is always better to verify news and what you see online first before even concluding.
